RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, England, were jointly operated as the largest US Air Force base in Western Europe during the Cold War. What happened there over three nights in late December 1980 was witnessed by active-duty military personnel, documented in an official memo, and measured with radiation detection equipment. It remains the most thoroughly documented military UFO encounter in British history.
The first night — December 26th — began with a reported crash in Rendlesham Forest, the woodland between the two bases. Security personnel investigated, believing an aircraft had come down. Instead, Airman John Burroughs and Sergeant Jim Penniston found a small triangular craft resting on the forest floor. It was covered with strange hieroglyphic-like symbols. Penniston placed his hands on the hull and later reported receiving a telepathic binary download — a string of ones and zeros that he wrote in his notebook that night. When decoded decades later, the binary translated to geographic coordinates and a message that researchers have debated ever since.
The craft lifted off silently and departed.
Two nights later, on December 28th, the encounters resumed. This time the response was different: Deputy Base Commander Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt himself led a patrol into the forest. He brought a Geiger counter. He brought a recording device. What he captured on that tape has been publicly available for decades — a real-time narration of an active UFO encounter by a senior US Air Force officer.
On the recording, Halt describes a pulsing red light that moves through the trees. He describes it splitting into multiple objects. He describes beams of light directed toward the base and toward the patrol. Throughout, his voice remains calm and methodical — the voice of a professional trying to document something he cannot explain.
The radiation readings at the triangular landing indentations were significantly elevated above background. The measurements were taken by trained personnel with calibrated equipment. The results were logged.
On January 13th, 1981, Halt filed an official memo to the British Ministry of Defence. The memo is factual and restrained. It describes the encounters as observations by military personnel of unidentified phenomena. It does not speculate. It simply reports. The memo was eventually declassified under FOIA.
Lt. Col. Halt has spoken publicly about the encounter for decades. He has stated he is "99.9% certain" the craft was not of this world. He has also alleged that US intelligence personnel arrived in the aftermath and removed physical evidence — and that he and his fellow witnesses were instructed to remain quiet.
Jim Penniston has been equally consistent. He describes the craft as real, solid, and intelligently operated. He says the symbols he saw were not random. He stands by the binary message and what it said.
Rendlesham is sometimes called "Britain's Roswell." But it is arguably better documented than Roswell. There is an official memo. There is audio tape. There is radiation data. There are multiple credentialed witnesses. All of it is real, and none of it has been explained.
